The IPR University Center organizes a seminar on the concept of “invention” under European patent law. Both the academic and the practical perspective will be taken into consideration. Specific focus will be posed on interpreting “invention” in certain technological fields, like computer software and biotechnology.

The keynote speaker of the seminar will be Senior lecturer David Booton from the University of Manchester.

David Booton is a senior lecturer in law at the University of Manchester.  His teaching and research interests are exclusively in the area of intellectual property law.  For many years he was director of the taught postgraduate programmes in intellectual property law at Manchester and currently teaches patent law and copyright law at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

His recent research work has employed an economic analysis in evaluating the effects of patents on gene based diagnostics and more generally in evaluating patents as tools for managing uncertainty in the marketplace.

Currently he is developing his interests in legal reasoning and argument and is working on a book which attempts to relate form to substance in intellectual property law.  If all goes to plan this work will be published by Edward Elgar in early 2015.
